Scheduled for release in early 2017, the Creators Update will bring a slew of personal device management and security features. The device management update aims to help IT administrators support the personal devices of employees more easily. It’s commonly known as the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Under BYOD, companies allow employees to bring their personal devices to the workplace and access enterprise data using those devices.
Device management
Rob Lefferts, director of program management for Windows Enterprise and Security, took to a new blog post to detail the upcoming updates. He says the Windows 10 Creators Update will improve Windows Analytics to help IT admins check if a device is ready for Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft will also provide a new tool that will help administrators convert a device to UEFI if the analysis finds the machine is using the old BIOS firmware. Enterprise users will be able to access the tool through management tools including the System Center Configuration Manager. The update is also set to introduce a variety of device management options. Companies that provide company-issued devices and BYOD can control how employees access Windows and Office content through the enrolled device. This works even without a mobile device management tool. For company-issued devices only, Microsoft will enroll the machine in any MDM tool used by the company.
Security updates
The Creators Update will also boost the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection to help IT admins detect and address threats. Microsoft will expand the ATP dashboard’s search scope with in-memory and in-kernel threat detection. Previously, Microsoft limited threat searches to disk. To further beef up the security enhancements, the software giant also partnered with security vendor FireEye to share threat intelligence. The partnership aims to help security teams add their threat data to Windows Defender ATP. Microsoft previously offered glimpses of some of these features during its Ignite 2016 conference. Most of these features are also available to Insiders that use Windows 10 Enterprise. Read also:
