Short hiatus

Precisely because it’s such a loved feature, users took it hard when the feature disappeared altogether earlier this month. This happened with build 16212 which wasn’t supposed to be on the Insider platform to begin with. One week after that, Microsoft updated the Insider platform with build 16215 and fans really hoped that the disappearance from the previous iteration was just a mistake that was now corrected. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case as file history backup was still missing when build 16215 dropped.

Return to glory

Windows users that really got into depending on the file history backup feature have reasons to celebrate as it would seem that the feature has made a return. It’s worth noting that Microsoft did not release any public statement regarding why the feature has returned or why it disappeared in the first place. However, users might be less preoccupied with that and more so with its presence in build 16226.

Coming back better than ever?

As previously mentioned, there has been no explanation given as to why the feature was suddenly removed, leaving users to speculate. While their guess is as good as anyone’s, a solid theory would be that Microsoft just wanted to modify the feature so that it’s bigger and better. Indeed, removing the feature temporarily would allow Microsoft to do what was needed in order to enhance the file history backup feature.

Support and integration with OneDrive’s On-Demand feature

One strong possibility that has been rumored is that Microsoft actually intended to provide the feature with support for their latest endeavor, On-Demand. For those that aren’t familiar with the latest addition to OneDrive, Microsoft added a new feature called On-Demand that allows users much more control over their files on the cloud platform and gives them more liberty as to what they can do with the files saved on the cloud at any given time. Overall, it’s great that the feature is making a return after its small hiatus and hopefully, some answers will arrive with it as well.
