The latest clue comes from the system version number in Windows 10 Preview build 14361. Namely, the number was changed from 1511 to 1607 for the first time ever. We know that Microsoft dubbed the November update as 1511 due to its release date, so if Redmond sticks to that policy, the number 1607 means the update will arrive in July 2016.  Of course, the version number doesn’t reveal the exact release date of the update, but since it’s called the Anniversary Update, it’s reasonable to think that it will arrive on Windows 10’s first birthday (conveniently, July 29). Even if Microsoft doesn’t release the Anniversary Update on July 29, it will probably release it some time this July, which doesn’t make a big difference in the long run.

Microsoft prepares apps for the Anniversary Update

Another sign that points to the Anniversary Update drawing near is how Microsoft is preparing its apps for it. Release notes of the company’s new apps for teachers and schools, called Set up School PC, say that the app will be compatible with Windows 10 version 1607. This is another mention of the version number, giving us even stronger indication that the Anniversary Update will come this July. Microsoft will stop offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 on July 29th, as well. So, it’s perfectly reasonable for the company to combine two events and get everything done in one day. Whatever Microsoft decides, we have an interesting month ahead of us that will dictate the future direction of Windows 10 as well as the Anniversary Update itself.
