Unsurprisingly, one of Redmond’s biggest interests lies in uniting two of its main products, Windows 10 PCs and the Xbox One console. Some steps have been made in this direction: cross-platform gaming between Windows 10 and Xbox players is already available with certain titles. Still, the company wants to take it even further. Microsoft has already divulged plans to redesign some of Xbox One’s most popular titles to make them available to Windows 10 players. And as Microsoft stated, that will certainly contribute to breaking down barriers between the two platforms, bringing benefits to both players and developers. But apparently, bringing Xbox One games to Windows 10 PCs is just one part of the plan: the company has confirmed that Windows 10 apps will work on Xbox One consoles, as well.
Microsoft to Merge Windows 10 Store and Xbox One Store
Microsoft Xbox Advanced Technology Group boss, Jason Ronald, said at the Game Developers Conference that Windows 10 Universal apps are on their way to the Xbox One platform. To accomplish that, Microsoft plans to merge the Windows 10 Store and the Xbox One Store. Besides merging both stores, Ronald also promised a set of new tools that will help developers to produce apps compatible with both platforms. One of the improvements promised was the ability of UWP to push more advanced graphics, something users are constantly demanding. Microsoft said developers will also experience a huge benefit by developing UWP apps because they’ll be able to present them to a wider audience, potentially making more money. But while some big name apps and games like Facebook, Twitter, Tomb Raider, and Gears of War have graced the Store, it still has a long way to go before it can even start to compete with Google’s Play Store and Valve’s Steam platform. Of course, even with all the hype around Windows 10’s cross-platform compatibility, there are still lots of people full of criticism towards Microsoft’s idea of uniting all its platforms. One of those people is Microsoft’s former CEO, Steve Ballmer, who said that Microsoft’s new approach simply “won’t work.” He went on to explain that Windows 10’s share in the apps market simply isn’t big enough to attract developers to build apps for Windows 10 in the first place. Only time can tell who will eventually be correct. However, we at Windows Report are looking forward to Microsoft’s promise to unite Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms. For us, it represents a revolution in how games and apps are played and used. Now we can only hope that the company will manage to solve all the problems that could potentially sabotage this type of expansive project. What do you think about Microsoft’s plan?
