The idea of folding a smartphone or a tablet in a way smaller package appeals to a lot of people.

Microsoft is working on a foldable device

Knowing that, the Redmond giant wants to get in the game with their own foldable device. On August 8, 2019, a patent application called COMPUTING DEVICE DISPLAY BONDING was revealed and it shows what’s Microsoft’s solution to the folding problem. According to the explanations in the document, the company is working on two new things: a new hinge mechanism, and a way to eliminate the folding display crease, also referred as “deadband”. The “deadband” term is also used in the document for describing the bezels around the display.

Microsoft’s patent reveals a bezel-less display

The new hinge mechanism looks a lot smaller and offers more durability. Mechanical parts in phones and tablets have always been a problem, so Microsoft is trying to address it by implementing new technologies. Also, the company is trying to remove the “deadband” from the middle of the folding screen and from around it. The final device should have minimal bezels and no folding crease. Keep in mind that this is just a patent, and only time will tell if  it will become a real product or just another test. What do you think about a folding device from Microsoft?
