This Microsoft Authenticator app is different than the previous one for Windows 10 Mobile. The previous app was made for Windows Phone 8.1, but also worked on Windows 10 Mobile, while the brand new app is fully built for Microsoft’s latest OS for phones. Microsoft Authenticator is actually already available in the Store, but only as a beta version. The new app combines features of all previous Microsoft’s authentication apps into a new hub for controlling Windows 10 devices. The app works with both Microsoft accounts and Azure AD accounts. With Microsoft Authenticator you’ll be able to log in to your Windows 10 computer with just a single tap on your phone, without needing to enter an authentication code. This feature, however will require a Bluetooth connection, so it might not be very practical for all users. Here’s the official description of Microsoft Authenticator:

“User experience refresh. We’ve made the app experience incredibly simple while maintaining the highest level of security. Best in breed MFA experience through one-click push notifications. You only need to click the “approve” button in the notification to complete your login. (And in most cases, you won’t even need to open the app to complete the approval.) Support for wearables. You can use an Apple Watch or Samsung Gear device to approve MFA challenges. Finger prints instead of passcodes. We’ve added support finger print based approvals on both iPhone and Android. Certificate based authentication. Support for enterprise customers to sign in through certificates instead of passwords.”
